Repetition, Patterns, Shape, Law/Rules
Above is the what and some of the how, now for the why. It is important for learners of this group to experience both 2D and 3D making. There are different ways of problem making and solution finding for each. Exploring different media can help encourage flexibility in solution finding. Story telling is a skill that every individual needs and uses every day, it is our way of communication. Developing the skill to see a story through or make changes when needed encourages and builds analytical and evaluative skills. Pattern and repetition is another daily skill, for these learners they are just developing their observational skills to recognize pattern and repetition. Exposure to this concept is an important part of their development, creating more dendrite connectors between different swaths of information.

Architecture is the practice of creating contained space.
4th graders are beginning to learn about cultural history and how each culture has contributed to the development of our civilization. It is important for them to see how art has shaped those contributions and changes throughout time. For this group it is surprising to find out that architecture is a form of art. A great opportunity for the conversation of form and function and which dictates the other. Discussing the idea of created space is another great opportunity for learners of this group to expand their prior knowledge and understanding of what art can be.
