Conclusion:
In conclusion, it is sad to me that the semester is ending and I will not see any of these students next semester. I feel that I have grown so much as an educator and yet not enough. There is always something new to learn or to consider for next time, it is a life long endeavor. The students at Fort Collins challenged me, in many ways, to think about where I need to improve, what skills I already possess and those that I have yet to learn. It surprised me to get some of the feedback that I did, it just showed me that I was not as approachable or as clear as I had believed to be. Two of the things I will be focusing on for next semester in my student teaching. Prior to working at Fort Collins I had no idea about AVID, what it was or what it meant to students. I believe that more schools should participate in this program, or something similar. The students really thought highly of the program. All of the students I worked with in AVID were 10th grade students, they made suggestions about making the program more relevant to them as they grew and got closer to graduation.
I feel that the major take away from this experience is that relevance plays a huge part in the education of high school age students. Relationships are huge, without connections with the students management becomes an issue and no one is successful. Through some really great educators I learned some techniques for management and redirecting that blew my mind. I suppose it all comes with practice, something I look forward to.
