Artist Statement
Crystal Hinds
I look for things in nature that represent ideals of humanity, when I find them they inspire me to create. My bodies of work span many genres, but I have always been rooted in the natural world, and human interaction with that world. My art bounces happily through different areas of discipline, exploring possible media of each discipline. My latest discovery has led me to the world of metal. Which leads us to the current body of work.
Through my education in the metal studio I have had the opportunity to explore various techniques, the current body of work is a result of that exploration. They are loosely connected through a vague theme; it is somewhat consistent through all of my work, the natural world and all of its fantastic forms. The selected pieces contain reflections of my perception, physical connectors to a cerebral ideal; Macro, Micro and internal cosmos.
As I have developed as an artist I have come to the realization that not all art needs to be beautiful and complicated, some art is rough, some art can be monumental and remain microcosmic, some art can be astounding and remain simple. This realization has opened new lines of communication with the world around me, new ways of thinking about my art and removed any preconceived notions of what art is. I plan to continue my exploration of material and concept so that I can continue to share what I have learned with others.
